William J. Yung III is the Founder and CEO of Columbia Sussex, a leading privately held hospitality ownership and management company based in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Since founding the company in 1972, Mr. Yung has guided Columbia Sussex’s growth from a single hotel acquisition into a nationally recognized owner and operator of full-service hotels across the United States.
In 1983, the Cincinnati office of Deloitte began publishing its ranking of "The 100," a list of the most successful Greater Cincinnati privately owned companies. Little-known Columbia Sussex was on the list—one of the few Kentucky-based companies to be included.
While Columbia Sussex had originally constructed its early motels, from the 1980s it more often bought and renovated existing hotels, thereby improving their value and profitability. It upgraded its inventory in conjunction with securing franchises from such prestigious brands as Hilton, Radisson, Holiday Inn and Marriott. The strategy worked and by 2007, the firm was number one in Greater Cincinnati's "The 100" list with total revenues of $665 million. The company continued to grow, with the total revenue exceeding $1 billion in 2007.
Mr. Yung’s vision and entrepreneurial leadership played a central role in Columbia Sussex’s expansion into major markets nationwide, with an emphasis on full-service and convention-oriented properties. His experience spans hotel development, acquisitions, operations, and brand partnerships, positioning Columbia Sussex as a respected participant in the U.S. hospitality industry.
